Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation holds first-half scholarship certificate ceremony on May 29; four more recipients than planned selected, with nearly 98 million won in total support
The Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation held its "2026 First-Half Scholarship Certificate Ceremony" at the district office's main conference room on May 29.
An exceptionally strong pool of applicants led the foundation to select 61 recipients in total — four more than originally planned. The scholarships amount to nearly 98 million won ($66,900) in combined support.
The recipients were selected across five categories: two Gumin Hanmaeum scholars (university students), 10 Hope scholars (high school students), 44 Model scholars (24 high school students and 20 university students), four Special Talent scholars (high school students), and one Happy (international high school) scholar.
Particularly notable this year is the newly established Hope Scholarship category, created to ensure that physical or environmental challenges do not become barriers to learning. The category supports high school students with disabilities, and 10 students were selected under it.
Support structures vary by category, ranging from one-time payments to funding renewable for up to four years.
The largest award, the Gumin Hanmaeum Scholarship, provides up to 3.5 million won ($2,320) per semester for four years. The Happy (international high school) Scholarship offers 3.6 million won annually, while Special Talent and Model scholars receive 1 million won for high school students and up to 2 million won for university students. The newly created Hope Scholarship provides 2 million won per recipient.
The foundation plans to continue its scholarship programs in the second half of the year.
In the second half, the foundation intends to select 30 Model scholars — 15 university students and 15 high school students — and 50 Happy scholars drawn from both university and high school students, distributing a total of 95 million won in scholarships.
Combined with existing recipients — including community-contribution scholars and dream-support scholars — the foundation's total annual scholarship disbursement is expected to reach approximately 380 million won.
