Parties go all-out across Gangwon, North Chungcheong, Busan and Gyeonggi provinces
With the June 3 local elections and National Assembly by-elections just two days away, some candidates have launched what they are calling "no-sleep campaigns" — overnight blitzes designed to squeeze out every last vote in a final test of endurance.
In the Gangwon Province gubernatorial race, People Power Party candidate Kim Jin-tae has drawn attention for his sleepless schedule. On May 29, the first day of early voting, Kim held a press conference at Wonju City Hall and announced he was launching a no-sleep campaign that day. "I will meet as many residents as possible," he said. "I will pour everything I have into changing the lives of Gangwon people."
Park Min-sik, the PPP candidate in the Busan Buk-gap National Assembly by-election, went even further, unveiling a "100-hour no-sleep campaign." Starting at 8 p.m. on May 29, Park plans to campaign without rest through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, when official campaigning ends.
Yang Hyang-ja, the PPP candidate for Gyeonggi Province governor, also rolled out a last-minute overnight push. She announced plans to spend the final stretch — from Monday through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday — on a nonstop tour of all 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province to win over undecided voters.
Democratic Party of Korea candidates have joined the overnight push as well. Koo Ja-yeol, the Democratic Party candidate for Wonju mayor, announced he was launching a 72-hour no-sleep all-out campaign drive in the final three days before the election.
In the North Chungcheong Province gubernatorial race, Democratic Party candidate Shin Yong-han unveiled a two-day, no-sleep traverse of the province. Shin plans to travel across North Chungcheong with a backpack over two days — including the final day of early voting — stopping at communities throughout the province.
