Bonghwa-gun in North Gyeongsang Province has been selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' "2026 Agriculture and Rural RE100 Demonstration Support Project," the county announced Friday.

The project aims to replace energy used in rural villages with clean renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions, while channeling revenue from power generation into revitalizing rural communities.

Over the next three years, Bonghwa-gun will carry out an energy self-sufficiency demonstration project in the Gogye 1-ri area of Myeongho-myeon in partnership with a solar cooperative, with a budget of about 1 billion won ($745,000).

Key components include installing a resident-led village renewable energy power station, fitting solar panels on housing and agricultural processing and retail facilities, and providing energy-use diagnostic consulting for the village.

Revenue from operating the village renewable energy power station will go toward supporting energy-vulnerable households and funding community public-interest projects.

"We expect this to serve as a model for rural residents struggling with high energy costs to achieve energy self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality," a Bonghwa-gun official said.
