Police have sought an arrest warrant for a suspect in their 50s who attacked a psychiatrist with a knife at Severance Hospital in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.

Seodaemun Police Station said Thursday it had applied to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office for an arrest warrant against the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of attempted murder.

A is accused of wielding a knife inside a psychiatry examination room at Sinchon Severance Hospital in Seodaemun-gu on Thursday at around 4:35 p.m. with the intent to kill a female professor.

The victim sustained a laceration approximately 5 centimeters long and was taken to the emergency room for treatment. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police responded after receiving a report that someone had stabbed a professor in the face and that there was heavy bleeding, and arrested A at the scene.

Police had initially applied charges of aggravated injury but upgraded them to attempted murder after A stated that the knife used — a kitchen knife brought from home — had been concealed in a shopping bag, leading investigators to conclude there was intent to kill.
