A person in their 20s who assaulted a girlfriend after being told the relationship was over has received a suspended prison sentence.

Daejeon District Court Judge Baek Gyeong-hyeon sentenced the defendant, identified only as A, 22, on charges of injury and residential intrusion, handing down six months in prison suspended for two years, according to Yonhap. The court also ordered 40 hours of community service and 40 hours of violence treatment counseling.

A is accused of assaulting the girlfriend, identified as B, during an argument on March 21 at around 11:52 p.m., after B said the relationship was over. A shoved B to the ground and struck B, causing fractures that required about four weeks of medical treatment. A is also accused of entering B's home without consent at around 3:48 a.m. the following day.

The court said A "inflicted injury out of anger when a romantic partner announced a breakup, and then intruded into the victim's residence against the victim's wishes even after police had responded, separated the parties and issued a warning." However, the court said it took into account that A admitted to and showed remorse for the offenses, and that the parties had reached a settlement with B expressing a wish not to pursue punishment.
