Public-private campaign draws participation from city hall, police and community welfare center
Hyundai Steel's Suncheon factory held a public-private traffic safety campaign Tuesday near the intersection behind the Suncheon court as part of its "H-type Shining Road" project.
About 30 participants from Hyundai Steel's Suncheon factory, the Suncheon city government's social welfare division, the Suncheon Police Station's traffic and crime prevention units, and the Suncheon Community Welfare Center took part in the campaign, which aimed to create safer walking conditions for students heading to school and drivers commuting to work.
The intersection near the Suncheon court was chosen because it sits adjacent to an apartment complex with a high proportion of students who walk to school and consistently sees heavy vehicle traffic during rush hours — conditions that have long drawn attention as a pedestrian safety concern.
Participants held up pickets and banners carrying messages urging safe following distances, a ban on smartphone use while walking, no jaywalking, and driver courtesy toward pedestrians.
The "H-type Shining Road" project is one of Hyundai Steel's flagship community outreach initiatives, which the Suncheon factory has carried out since 2021 and plans to continue next year.
Through the project, Hyundai Steel has installed various traffic safety facilities, including LED auxiliary traffic signals and red-light countdown displays.
"We are working with local partner organizations to build a traffic environment where both children and residents can feel safe," a Suncheon factory official said. "We will continue to pursue effective traffic safety activities and contribute to the safety of local residents and the advancement of traffic culture."
