Seoul's Seongbuk-gu has moved to improve recycling conditions in neighborhoods dominated by single-family and multi-unit housing.

The district announced Monday that it had partnered with the Seongbuk-gu Urban Management Corporation to install four recycling collection units in front of the public parking lot at Gyeongdong High School — which also houses the Seongbuk District Fitness Center — on Friday.

The newly installed units consist of an unmanned transparent PET bottle receiver, a mobile collection bin for small and mid-sized discarded home appliances, a fluorescent lamp disposal box and a used battery disposal box. The setup allows residents to sort and drop off common recyclables and hazardous waste in one convenient location.

The site sits in an area packed with detached and multi-unit homes that, unlike apartment complexes, had lacked dedicated recycling spaces. Residents had long struggled to dispose of waste properly — transparent PET bottles were often mixed in with general plastics, while spent fluorescent lamps and batteries ended up in standard garbage bags.

The district expects the new facility to make disposal easier for residents while also boosting resource recovery from recyclables and ensuring the safe collection of hazardous waste.

The project is a collaborative effort combining a proposal from the Seongbuk-gu Urban Management Corporation with administrative support from the district office. The district is responsible for supporting the installation and managing collection operations, while the corporation provides the space and handles on-site maintenance.

"Proper recycling is the single most important first step toward building a sustainable, resource-circulating society," Seongbuk-gu District Mayor Lee Seung-ro said. "We will work closely with local organizations to make disposal more convenient for residents and create a clean, eco-friendly Seongbuk-gu."
