A man in his 30s has been taken into custody on suspicion of neglecting his 17-month-old daughter to death.

The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's women and juvenile crimes investigation unit applied for an arrest warrant against the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of child abuse resulting in death.

A pre-arrest hearing was held Friday morning at the Pyeongtaek branch of Suwon District Court. A ruling on whether to issue the warrant was expected later Friday.

A is accused of failing to properly feed his 17-month-old daughter and leaving her alone while going to work after A's wife left the home earlier this month, ultimately causing the child's death through neglect.

A called 119 emergency services Wednesday night, saying his daughter was not breathing. Police, who responded at the fire department's request for joint assistance, arrested A at the hospital.

A told investigators that he had given the child formula about twice a day, according to police.

No external injuries were found on the child.

Police said they planned to conduct an autopsy Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
