Police have applied for an arrest warrant for a subway station worker who attacked a female colleague with a knife at Wondan Station on Line 3 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, leaving her seriously injured.

According to the Goyang Police Station on Thursday, police filed for an arrest warrant against the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of attempted murder. A pre-warrant hearing is expected to be held as early as Friday.

A is accused of attacking a female colleague, identified as B, with a knife at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the station's operations room in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, with intent to kill.

B sustained serious injuries to the neck and legs and was taken to a hospital, where B underwent multiple emergency surgeries and remains under treatment.

Another station worker subdued A at the time of the attack, and a laborer from a nearby construction site bound A with cable ties before handing the suspect over to responding officers. Police arrested A at the scene.

The two had worked together since early this year, and B was A's sunbae, or senior colleague. They are reported to have had work-related conflicts. Police said they do not currently view the incident as a relationship-based crime or a crime with an unusual motive.

A had been carrying two knives in a bag and told police during questioning that the weapons were for self-protection. A also said there was no recollection of the attack itself.

Police believe A used knives brought to work in advance and are investigating whether the attack was premeditated and what the specific motive may have been.

The victim's family has claimed that a request to separate the two workers had been made beforehand but was rejected by the employer.

B's husband wrote in an online community post that his wife had made multiple requests for personnel action against the suspect but that none were accepted.

Police are also investigating whether the company's response was adequate. The Goyang Police Station will handle the case directly rather than transferring it to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Railway Special Judicial Police.
