Forum to discuss disclosure assurance readiness, pre-assurance use

Participants to explore ways to boost ESG disclosure reliability

The Korean Institute of Certified Public Accountants announced Thursday it will hold the 27th Sustainability Assurance Forum as a webinar on Nov. 5.

The forum will center on the theme of "Assurance Readiness and Pre-Assurance for Sustainability Disclosures." Han Dae-geun, a partner at Samjong KPMG, will present on the key tasks and practical considerations companies need to address in preparing for assurance, and will outline effective approaches to using pre-assurance.

Pre-assurance is a process by which companies review the reliability of their disclosed information and the soundness of their internal management systems before obtaining formal assurance on sustainability disclosures. It can serve as a tool for companies to strengthen their data management capabilities and improve the accuracy and consistency of disclosed information as mandatory sustainability disclosure and assurance requirements approach.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Baek Tae-young, an emeritus professor at Sungkyunkwan University. Panelists will include Kim Kyung-bae, a senior expert at the Korean Standards Association; Shim Jeong-eun, an executive director at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering; Oh Seung-jae, chief executive of Sustinvest; Oh Chang-taek, a partner at EY Han Young; Yun Jae-won, a professor at the Korea Investor Forum (Hongik University); and Lee Ung-hee, a standing member of the Korea Accounting Standards Board.

Registration for the forum is available through the pop-up window and notices section on the Korean Institute of Certified Public Accountants website.

Chairman Choi Un-yeol said discussions on institutionalizing assurance alongside sustainability disclosures have grown increasingly concrete of late. "Pre-assurance will serve as a useful tool for reviewing the current disclosure framework and addressing shortcomings ahead of the full introduction of an assurance system," Choi said. Choi added that the forum was expected to help companies establish the direction of their assurance preparations and identify specific action items.

Since 2022, the Korean Institute of Certified Public Accountants has used the Sustainability Assurance Forum to broadly share the accounting industry's expertise on sustainability assurance and to discuss related implications and responses. In addition, the institute has consistently worked to establish domestic sustainability disclosure and assurance frameworks through a range of initiatives, including translating international assurance standards, providing education, operating an ESG academy and publishing reference materials.
