A man in his 60s has been sentenced to four years in prison for killing his son, who was in his 30s, during a physical struggle in which the son had wielded a weapon and threatened him.

According to legal sources, the Supreme Court's Third Division confirmed on Oct. 1 the lower court's sentence against A, 64, who had been indicted on murder charges. Justice Eom Sang-pil presided over the case.

According to the charges, A, a medical school professor, stabbed his son with a broken dish during a struggle after the son came to his home in September last year, struck him and made threats.

The investigation found that A had grown estranged from his son after disciplining the boy over misconduct during his school years, eventually cutting off direct contact and communicating only through his wife to send living expenses.

After A's wife died last year, the son began expressing anger toward A, claiming the mother had died because of the father and accusing A of trying to take sole possession of the inheritance.

A tried to avoid contact with his son, but on the day of the incident the son arrived armed with a weapon, threatened to kill A for about an hour, and a struggle ensued during which A committed the act, according to the investigation.

A argued in court that he had not intended to kill his son, but the claim was rejected.
