Samsung Electronics posted a quarterly record operating profit of 106.5 trillion won ($79.7 billion) from its semiconductor business alone in the third quarter.

Samsung Electronics said Thursday that its Device Solutions division, which oversees the semiconductor business, recorded an operating profit of 106.5 trillion won in the third quarter — the first time the unit's quarterly operating profit has surpassed 100 trillion won. The figure represents a 20 percent increase from the 89.2 trillion won posted in the second quarter.

Semiconductor division sales also rose 15 percent from the second quarter to 147.1 trillion won. The memory chip unit was particularly strong, generating 140.7 trillion won in sales and driving overall earnings growth.

On a consolidated basis, Samsung Electronics recorded total sales of 195.3 trillion won and an operating profit of 107.4 trillion won in the third quarter. Both figures surged 127 percent and 780 percent, respectively, from the same period last year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of record earnings since the fourth quarter of last year.
