South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday it plans to send a letter to the president of the UN Security Council over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone attributed to North Korea.
Spokesperson Park Du-sun made the announcement at a regular briefing Thursday. The South Korean ambassador to the UN is set to dispatch the letter from New York the same day (local time).
Park said the letter would explain that the explosion was caused by landmines planted by North Korean troops and constitutes a clear violation of the Armistice Agreement. It will also demand an apology and responsible action from Pyongyang, and call for dialogue to prevent further escalation and restore trust, he said.
In addition, Park said the letter would draw attention to North Korea's recent attempts to label South Korean military operations along the MDL as provocations and shift responsibility for regional tensions onto Seoul.
