A woman in her 40s suspected of killing her mother in her 60s in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, has been arrested after her own daughter called police to report the incident.
Seoul's Gangseo Police Station said officers arrested the suspect, identified only as A, at around 8:15 a.m. Thursday at an apartment in Ujangsan-dong, Gangseo-gu, on charges of matricide. She is currently under investigation.
The caller was A's daughter, identified as B, who detected something was wrong after speaking with her mother by phone.
B had called that morning trying to reach her grandmother, C, but A answered instead and said she had scolded the grandmother for trying to feed her food laced with poison. Alarmed, B called 112, the police emergency line.
A had been receiving psychiatric treatment since 2016. Her symptoms had recently worsened, leading her to quit her job and stay home, according to the investigation.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances and motive behind the killing. They also plan to examine whether A's psychiatric history is connected to the incident.
