Heated outdoor seats and smart rest shelters put into operation; welfare checks on vulnerable residents underway
Cold-wave reduction facilities inspected in advance from Monday as proactive measure
Eunpyeong-gu in Seoul activated its cold-weather response system to protect vulnerable residents and ensure public safety after the city issued its first cold snap advisory of the autumn season at 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Ahead of the advisory, the district conducted pre-emptive inspections of its cold-wave reduction facilities — including heated outdoor seats and multipurpose smart rest shelters — starting Monday. Officials checked whether each facility was operating normally and in a safe condition, and repaired or replaced any damaged units to prepare for a sudden drop in temperatures.
With the advisory now in effect, the district has activated the facilities that cleared inspection and will continuously monitor their operating status to ensure residents can use them safely. It is also conducting welfare checks on residents vulnerable to cold weather to prevent cold-related health problems.
An emergency cold-weather shelter has also been opened on the first floor of the Eunpyeong-gu District Office for residents in urgent need of protection. The district plans to provide temporary refuge for those caught off guard by the sudden cold and to share cold-weather safety tips and precautions through SNS and other channels.
The district will operate a comprehensive support operations center to continuously monitor cold-weather alerts and temperature changes, and will strengthen winter safety management — including the operation of cold-wave reduction facilities and the protection of vulnerable residents.
"We inspected our cold-wave reduction facilities in advance to prepare for the sudden cold and put in place a response system to protect vulnerable residents," Eunpyeong-gu District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said. "As temperatures drop sharply, people need to take extra care of their health and safety, and we will do our utmost on the ground to ensure residents can live safely."
