Speakers share policy developments on culture-led urban regeneration and metropolitan transport
Gwangju University's Urban Regeneration Specialist Training Program announced Thursday that it recently co-hosted an expert lecture series on urban regeneration and renewal with the Korea Land and Housing Corporation's Gwangju and South Jeolla Province regional headquarters, held at the university's Hosim Hall.
Organized as part of a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport support project, the series was designed to share the latest policy trends and strengthen field-oriented expertise as urban regeneration and renewal policies diversify to encompass smart technology, mobility and small-scale redevelopment projects.
The opening session of the four-part program, running across the second semester of the 2026 academic year, featured a lecture by Park Se-hun, vice president of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, on the theme "Culture-led urban regeneration: what to do and how." Gwangju University adjunct professor Jeong Jin-gyu also presented on "The spatial structure of an integrated special city and metropolitan transport," outlining directions for change and development in regional spatial policy.
Upcoming sessions will cover major issues in urban regeneration and renewal, including a presentation by Oh Jae-hyeon, a division head at LH's Gwangju and South Jeolla Province branch, on New York's transfer of development rights system and its potential application in South Korea.
Kim Hang-jip, director of the Urban Regeneration Specialist Training Program, said the lecture series is meaningful for developing practice-oriented professionals who can respond to a rapidly changing urban policy environment and bridge theory with on-the-ground work. "We will continue to strengthen field-centered education in collaboration with public institutions to contribute to solving regional urban challenges," he added.
