Orion said Thursday it will scale up Custard production lines in South Korea, Vietnam and India to meet rising global demand for the snack cake.

Orion Custard, first launched in South Korea in 2004, posted combined global annual sales of 154 billion won ($116 million) last year, up 14 percent from the previous year. China, Vietnam and India together accounted for 76 percent of total sales. The product has continued to record double-digit sales growth through September this year.

Orion added a domestic production line in September and has since brought new lines online in Vietnam and India. The expansion raises Custard's global production capacity to a maximum of 300 billion won annually — roughly double last year's sales.

In Vietnam, the company sells a wide range of varieties, including the original, com (a traditional Vietnamese ingredient made from young glutinous rice), tiramisu, raspberry, egg lava, reduced-sugar and melon. In China, the product has won over local consumers with its combination of fluffy cake and smooth cream filling. In India, it is popular among young urban consumers who favor premium desserts.

"We have expanded our production capacity to keep pace with surging global demand, and we will develop Custard into a world-class brand," an Orion official said.
