Word of mouth spreads after relaunch; sells out almost immediately
Newtro trend and home-drinking culture fuel renewed demand
"People who've tried it and people who haven't are both going crazy for it." — A convenience store owner
The spirit once joked about as the drink with no hangover the next day — but a two-day recovery the day after that — is back. Captain Q, the budget-friendly "yangju" (Western-style spirits) brand that made a name for itself on affordability, has returned after an 11-year absence, and the response has been overwhelming.
Captain Q first won fans in the 1980s as an accessible spirit at a reasonable price. Lotte Brewing launched the product in January 1980, and it sold more than 10 million bottles in its first year alone. Its distinctive captain character and the exotic image of rum made it instantly recognizable to consumers.
Its edge was price. At launch, a 700-milliliter bottle retailed for about 3,000 won. That was more expensive than a 360-milliliter bottle of soju, which cost 190 won in 1980, but far cheaper than premium whisky and other imported spirits. Word spread that a 40-proof spirit could be enjoyed at a relatively low cost. In 1985, a 180-milliliter flask-sized bottle was introduced for outings such as picnics, hiking and fishing trips.
The brand's fortunes changed after a 1991 revision to the liquor tax law forced the removal of base distillate to keep prices down, and Captain Q was eventually discontinued in 2015 amid a scandal over adulterated spirits. Rising incomes and increasingly diverse drinking tastes also played a role. Even so, the product's distinctive image and old advertisements continued to circulate on online communities.
The relaunched Captain Q is again leading with price. GS25 will begin selling the 360-milliliter bottle for 6,000 won on Thursday. The bottle retains the original design and deep green color. The aim is to offer nostalgia to consumers who remember the brand and a novel, distinctive experience to younger drinkers encountering it for the first time.
The alcohol content has changed, however. The new version comes in at 35 percent alcohol by volume — five percentage points lower than the original 40 percent at launch, matching the level it carried when it was discontinued in 2015. The flavor profile has also been updated: the recipe uses 99 percent authentic Caribbean rum distillate and undergoes additional aging in Pedro Ximénez casks, producing a rich, sweet and smooth taste.
Early demand has been unmistakable. Lotte Mart sold about 99 percent of its initial stock on the day of its Thursday launch, and the remaining inventory was gone by Friday. The product has been equally hard to find at convenience stores. The "Captain Q Treasure Box 360ml (2-pack)," which GS25 began selling Wednesday, had moved about 98 percent of its received stock as of Monday.
The newtro trend — a portmanteau of "new" and "retro" — is driving much of the buzz. The brand appeals to middle-aged and older consumers through nostalgia while offering younger shoppers an unfamiliar and distinctive brand experience. As the consumer trend of rediscovering once-popular brands spreads, older labels are finding themselves back in the spotlight.
Home drinking has also been a factor. Spirits such as whisky were long associated with bars and entertainment venues, but as rising prices have made dining and drinking out more expensive, more consumers are enjoying alcohol at home to their own taste. Analysts say this shift has drawn attention to products that combine a reasonable price with a compelling brand story.
The numbers bear this out. In the first nine months of this year, whisky accounted for 16.3 percent of total liquor sales at E-mart — surpassing soju (15.9 percent) for the first time. Whisky sales growth at the retailer stood at 21.8 percent in 2023, 16.1 percent in 2024 and 2.9 percent in 2025, before climbing back into double digits this year.
"It is deeply meaningful to bring back Captain Q, a brand that consumers have cherished for so long," a Lotte Chilsung Beverage official said. "With its sweet and smooth taste at an accessible price, we believe both first-time drinkers and those who remember it fondly will be able to enjoy it without hesitation."
