Hyundai Engineering & Construction has surpassed its annual urban renewal contracting target of 12 trillion won ($8.94 billion) after winning the Mokdong 10 complex reconstruction project.

The company announced Monday that it had been selected as the contractor at a general assembly of the Mokdong 10 reconstruction project held Sunday.

The project will redevelop an existing 2,160-unit apartment complex in Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul into a new residential development of up to 40 stories comprising 4,248 units along with ancillary welfare facilities. Korea Real Estate Investment & Trust is the project developer, and total construction costs are estimated at approximately 2.61 trillion won.

The contract marks Hyundai Engineering & Construction's first entry into the Mokdong New Town reconstruction market. The company will apply its high-end residential brand THE H to the complex for the first time in the Mokdong area, proposing the name THE H MOKDONG ESER.

"Eser" is the Hebrew word for the number 10, chosen to reflect the identity of Mokdong 10 and the district's reputation as an education-focused community. The concept envisions the complex as a prestigious residential development for the next generation, centered on an "All Life Campus" theme that weaves Mokdong's core value of education throughout the living environment.

The design aims to create a residential setting where education, nature and community are organically connected, allowing residents of all generations — not only children — to learn, interact and grow as part of daily life.

To that end, Hyundai Engineering & Construction collaborated with internationally renowned architecture firm Morphosis and global integrated design group Sasaki. The architectural design by Morphosis — founded by Pritzker Prize laureate Thom Mayne — reflects the planned urban character of the Mokdong New Town, while Sasaki, which has extensive experience designing university campuses worldwide, contributed the landscape and community design.

With this contract, Hyundai Engineering & Construction has exceeded its annual urban renewal target of 12 trillion won. The company became the first in the industry to record more than 10 trillion won in urban renewal contracts for two consecutive years as of last month, and has continued to expand its presence at major redevelopment sites.

"The Mokdong 10 project is a meaningful milestone as Hyundai Engineering & Construction takes its first step into the Mokdong New Town reconstruction market," a company official said. "We will bring together our technological capabilities, the brand strength of THE H, and our global design expertise to carry forward the educational pride that Mokdong has built over the years into future residential value — and deliver a premium residential complex whose value will be recognized for generations to come."

Hyundai Engineering & Construction had previously presented Mokdong 10 association members with a four-part education-focused plan for THE H MOKDONG ESER. According to the proposal, every building in the complex will feature a private academy for individual study, including a learning lounge called "Connect Study," consultation rooms, a dedicated auditorium for college admissions seminars and a managed reading room.
