President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday expressed deep condolences for a firefighter killed in the line of duty while battling a blaze and conducting rescue operations in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, pledging that the state would ensure the safety and proper treatment of firefighters.

In a Facebook post, Lee wrote that he was devastated by the news of the firefighter who died while carrying out his duties at the Bucheon fire scene. "I offer my sincere condolences," he said.

"I will deeply honor the dedication of the deceased, who stepped into a dangerous scene to protect the lives and safety of the people," he added.

Lee framed the safety of firefighters as a fundamental obligation of the state. "Ensuring the safety of firefighters who protect the public is a duty the state must fulfill," he said. "The government will thoroughly review safety measures so that frontline personnel can carry out their duties more safely, and will address any shortcomings."

Lee also pledged to improve the treatment and recognition of firefighters. "I will take careful steps to ensure that the sacrifice and hard work of firefighters dedicated to serving the people are met with the recognition and treatment they deserve," he said.

Lee extended his condolences to the bereaved family and their colleagues. "I convey my deepest sympathies to the family members who have lost a loved one," he said, adding that he also offered "heartfelt comfort to fellow firefighters who are sharing in this grief."
