Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province is mounting an all-out campaign to attract a correctional facility, hoping the project will serve as a new engine of growth for the county.
The county held an information session Friday at the Onnuriteo conference hall in Uiseong-eup, following earlier sessions for civic groups and residents of Geumseong-myeon.
Uiseong-gun has designated three candidate sites for the facility: Tapri-ri in Geumseong-myeon, Cheolpa-ri in Uiseong-eup, and Wondang-ri in Uiseong-eup.
County officials have framed the bid as a defining challenge for Uiseong's future and are marshaling all available administrative resources to secure the project.
"In the face of the threat of regional extinction, landing a correctional facility is a golden opportunity to change Uiseong's future," Uiseong-gun County Mayor Choi Yu-cheol said. "We will do everything in our power to make it happen."
