Inha University has deployed an AI-powered system to sharpen the accuracy of ship arrival time predictions at Incheon port.

The university announced Friday that its AI Convergence Research Center, working with Incheon Port Authority, has formally introduced the AI-based vessel arrival time prediction technology at the port's lock gate operations.

The system draws on real-time data from Automatic Identification System transponders — including position, speed and heading — to calculate estimated times of arrival with a precision 49 percent higher than the previous method, which relied on simple distance-and-speed calculations.

The average margin of error against actual arrival times has been reduced to within six minutes, an improvement expected to significantly boost vessel scheduling efficiency at the lock gates and raise overall port operational productivity.

The prediction data will be available in real time through the "Lock Gate Operations" section of the Incheon Port Authority website. The project also achieved practical outcomes in workforce training and startup development.

Meanwhile, Inha University has been selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT's AI Innovation Graduate School program. Through 2031, the university plans to invest a total of 19.5 billion won ($14.5 million) — drawn from national government funds, local government support and university resources — to accelerate the training of specialized AI professionals across manufacturing, logistics and robotics.
