A 5-year-old girl who nearly lost consciousness while eating at a restaurant was saved by the quick actions of a bystander and police officers.

On Friday, the South Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency posted a video titled "A child losing consciousness… everyone moved in that moment" to its official YouTube channel.

At around 1:30 p.m. on July 29, a 5-year-old girl identified only as A was eating pork cutlets with her mother at a restaurant in Daebang-dong, Changwon, when she suddenly slumped against the table and curled up.

The girl's eyes lost focus and her face turned pale. Her alarmed mother called for help, and a restaurant employee, suspecting the child had choked on food, immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver. The girl's condition did not improve.

A bystander who witnessed the scene ran about 50 meters to a nearby police substation and told officers the child appeared unable to breathe after eating pork cutlets.

Officers rushed to the restaurant and assessed the girl's condition. When emergency responders arrived shortly after, an officer carried the girl outside and handed her over to the paramedics. The girl did not lose consciousness and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being safely reunited with her family.

Hospital tests later revealed that the girl had not choked on food — her sudden breathing difficulty had been caused by stomatitis, a mouth inflammation.

The South Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency released footage of the incident and expressed gratitude to the bystanders "who did not turn away from the emergency and stepped in to help."
