Daegu's Gunwi-gun announced Friday that it had won an excellence award at the Rural Development Administration's 2026 Farm Byproduct Safe Disposal Competition.

The county earned high marks for actively promoting safe farm byproduct disposal at agricultural sites, providing collection and shredding support, and working to ease inconveniences for farmers while advancing resource recycling.

Gunwi-gun was particularly recognized for building a practical safe-disposal system at farm sites — one that prevents illegal burning during the byproduct-handling process and returns shredded material to the soil.

The county shifted its approach to farm byproduct shredding by linking it to wildfire prevention, moving away from simple "no-burning" guidance toward a proactive model centered on collection, shredding and on-site processing.

Through this approach, farm byproducts were transformed from a potential wildfire hazard into an organic resource that can be returned to farmland, allowing the county to pursue farmer convenience, resource recycling and wildfire prevention at the same time.

"We will continue working to reduce illegal burning of farm byproducts and to establish safe, efficient disposal and resource recycling practices," a Gunwi-gun official said.
