First-grade students at elementary schools in Incheon will soon be able to ride the city's urban railway using their own transit cards rather than a parent's.
Incheon Transit Corporation announced Friday it is launching a program called "My First Transit Card," which provides prepaid transit cards to incoming elementary school students who are beginning to pay public transportation fares.
The program is designed to give children hands-on experience using public transportation independently and to help them develop good habits when riding the urban railway.
A total of 1,368 first-grade students at 16 elementary schools located in transit-oriented areas along the Incheon urban railway network are eligible.
Each student receives a prepaid transit card featuring a friendly character design, along with a lanyard-style card holder.
Corporation staff visited the designated schools in person to distribute the cards and conduct on-site education sessions tailored to young children. The sessions covered boarding and alighting etiquette and safe platform behavior, presented in an easy-to-understand format.
"This initiative goes beyond simply handing out items — it carries meaningful value in teaching children the right way to use public transportation," said Choi Jeong-gyu, president of Incheon Transit Corporation. "We will continue to expand related programs so that children in the region can develop safe and proper public transportation habits."
