Contract signed with Taean Wind Power for full engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced Friday that it signed a contract Thursday with Taean Wind Power for the design, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning of an offshore substation in Taean-gun.
Taean Wind Power is a joint venture among Singapore-based renewable energy company Vena Energy, Danish green energy investment and development firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and state-owned power generator Korea Western Power.
The signing ceremony was attended by Won Gwang-sik, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Marine Energy Business Division, and Clement Helbig de Balzac, CEO of Taean Wind Power.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries had signed a pre-engineering contract for the project in March and a preferred supply agreement in July, before concluding the main contract following detailed negotiations.
An offshore substation is a key piece of infrastructure that transmits electricity generated by wind turbines at an offshore wind complex to the mainland. The Taean offshore substation will step up the voltage of electricity produced at a 500 MW offshore wind complex to be installed in waters near Gaeuido-ri in Taean-gun and transmit it to shore.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries obtained basic design approval from DNV, the Norwegian classification society, last year for its in-house 500 MW offshore substation model and completed detailed design verification in August. It became the first domestic offshore substation project to receive internationally recognized certification of design compliance and safety under international regulations and standards.
The company plans to pursue further collaboration with Vena Energy, CIP and Korea Western Power on follow-on offshore wind projects in South Korea.
