Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho pushed back Thursday against the insurrection special prosecutor's demand for a 20-year prison sentence, calling it "a political sentencing demand."
Choo made the remarks to reporters after an emergency economic countermeasures meeting Thursday morning, adding that "following the politically motivated warrant request and fabricated indictment last December, a political sentencing demand has now been made."
On the trial itself, Choo said he had never been asked, during a phone call with the president at the time of the martial law declaration, to block the National Assembly's vote to lift it, nor had he ever intended to do so.
"I will continue to face this with confidence while awaiting a fair ruling from the court," Choo said, adding that city affairs — including the administrative integration project — would be pursued "with full force and without the slightest wavering."
