Gangnam-gu marked the 30th Senior Citizens' Day on Thursday with a ceremony at the COEX Auditorium, welcoming more than 1,000 elderly residents under the theme "Beautiful Years, Brilliant You."

Senior Citizens' Day has been observed as a national holiday on Oct. 2 every year since 1997, designated to honor the contributions of older generations to the nation and society. Gangnam-gu holds an annual ceremony to reaffirm the community's respect and gratitude toward its senior residents.

The event featured a performance, commendation presentations, a specially produced video screening and celebratory stage acts. The opening was led by media performance group Saengdonggam Crew, which brought the traditional symbolism of the five cardinal colors to life through a modern performance filled with vivid light and dynamic energy. A total of 11 individuals and organizations — including exemplary seniors and contributors to senior welfare — then received commendations, followed by a series of celebratory performances.

Particularly notable this year was a specially produced video capturing the vibrant daily lives and wisdom of Gangnam-gu's senior residents. The screening offered a moment for generations to reflect together on the dedication of the elders who helped build today's Gangnam, sharing a sense of gratitude across age groups.

In observance of October as Senior Respect Month, the district will hold community senior appreciation festivals across all 22 dong neighborhoods, running sequentially from Oct. 19 to Oct. 29. The events are designed to express respect for local elders and foster intergenerational harmony, with each neighborhood offering programs tailored to its own character. Detailed schedules and venues can be confirmed through local community centers.

Gangnam-gu District Mayor Kim Hyun-ki said the dedication and wisdom of the district's seniors are "the firm roots that made today's South Korea and Gangnam possible," adding that he hoped the 30th Senior Citizens' Day ceremony served as "a warm occasion to convey deep respect and gratitude to each and every elder for the brilliant life they have lived."
