A win over 11-0 Sterling would put former champion back in title contention

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka of the Czech Republic will look to revive his career against unbeaten prospect Navajo Sterling of New Zealand.

The UFC announced that Prochazka and Sterling will meet in a light heavyweight bout as the main event of a UFC Fight Night card at ABHA Arena in Doha, Qatar, on Nov. 21 (local time).

The fight represents a critical crossroads for Prochazka in his bid to re-enter the title picture. At UFC 327 in April, he challenged Carlos Ulberg for the vacant light heavyweight title but was stopped by KO at 3 minutes 45 seconds of the first round. Ulberg claimed the belt after finishing Prochazka despite tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in the fight.

Prochazka first won the UFC light heavyweight title in 2022 by defeating Glover Teixeira but relinquished it due to a shoulder injury. He then lost two title fights against Alex Pereira and fell short again this year against Ulberg.

Every defeat of Prochazka's UFC career since joining the promotion in 2020 has come in a title fight — he has never lost in a non-title bout. His overall record stands at 32 wins, one draw and six losses.

Sterling is a rising force in the light heavyweight division with an unblemished 11-0 record. He has continued his upward trajectory since entering the UFC through Dana White's Contender Series, and this year alone he knocked out or stopped Bruno Lopes, Ion Cutelaba and former champion Jan Blachowicz in succession to establish himself as one of the division's most dangerous fighters.

The matchup carries significant risk for Prochazka. A victory over a former champion would put him back on the path to a title shot, but a loss to the undefeated Sterling would push him further from contention. For Sterling, beating Prochazka would be a springboard into the upper echelon of the light heavyweight division.

The card will also feature former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling, who takes on featherweight prospect Kevin Vallejos. A lightweight bout between Dan Hooker and former featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega is also scheduled — it will mark Ortega's UFC lightweight debut after competing primarily at featherweight.

All eyes will be on whether Prochazka can stop Sterling's unbeaten run and reopen the door to another title shot.
