Korea University Anam Hospital opened a dedicated pediatric emergency room at its regional emergency medical center, marking the occasion with an inauguration ceremony on Sept. 9. Senior hospital officials and staff attended the event, which signaled a new chapter in strengthening the hospital's pediatric emergency care system.
The new unit builds on the infrastructure of the existing pediatric emergency care facility, with systematic reinforcements to dedicated medical staff, beds and clinical protocols aimed at raising the quality and stability of pediatric emergency services. The hospital added three physicians specializing exclusively in pediatric emergency care and put four dedicated beds for pediatric patients into operation, laying the groundwork for a more advanced level of specialized care.
"Children often present with disease patterns, symptom expressions and treatment needs that differ significantly from those of adults, making careful, age-appropriate care essential," the hospital said in a statement. It added that the new setup reinforces initial emergency care led by dedicated pediatric emergency specialists and consolidates a clinical pathway that allows for rapid handoff to pediatric subspecialty services when needed.
The hospital also reorganized the physical layout of the pediatric emergency care space while simultaneously strengthening staffing and bed operations. The changes are expected to allow for closer monitoring of each patient's condition and a more seamlessly coordinated process — from diagnostic workups and treatment to hospitalization and specialist referrals — based on the severity of each case.
"With the opening of the pediatric emergency room at Korea University Anam Hospital's regional emergency medical center, we have added dedicated pediatric emergency specialists and significantly reinforced our clinical system, and we expect our pediatric emergency care capabilities to improve considerably," said Han Seung-bum, president of Korea University Anam Hospital. "We hope that pediatric emergency patients will receive the best possible care more quickly and safely, and that seamless coordination with the department of pediatrics will lead to better treatment outcomes."
