District officials, affiliated agency staff and council members voluntarily pooled donations to support flood recovery efforts in Nepal, presenting the funds to the Embassy of Nepal in Seoul on Monday.
Seongbuk-gu visited the Embassy of Nepal in Seoul on Monday to deliver 23.65 million won ($17,100) in relief donations to support flood recovery and aid displaced residents in Nepal.
The handover ceremony was attended by Seongbuk-gu District Mayor Lee Seung-ro and Nirmal Prasad Bhattarai, chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of Nepal in Seoul, along with Seongbuk-gu Council Speaker Yang Sun-im, Seongbuk Urban Management Corporation Chairman Park Geun-jong, Seongbuk Cultural Foundation CEO Seo No-won, Seongbuk Welfare Foundation Chairman Yoon Jae-seong and Kim Jin-gyu, head of the Seongbuk-gu civil servants' union chapter.
Attendees shared updates on the flood damage and recovery situation in Nepal and conveyed their condolences to those affected. They also expressed hope for a swift recovery in the disaster-hit areas and for displaced residents to return to their daily lives as soon as possible.
The fundraising drive was organized in recognition of the longstanding ties between Seongbuk-gu and Nepal — the Nepalese Embassy and the ambassador's residence are both located in the district — as a gesture of solidarity and practical support for Nepali citizens struggling in the wake of the floods.
District employees participated voluntarily, and staff from affiliated agencies including the Seongbuk Urban Management Corporation, Seongbuk Cultural Foundation and Seongbuk Welfare Foundation, as well as Seongbuk-gu Council members, also joined the effort. One employee of the Seongbuk Urban Management Corporation made a personal donation of 300,000 won, adding further meaning to the collective act of giving.
The collected funds will be transferred through a designated account at the Nepalese Embassy and used for flood recovery and support for displaced residents in the affected areas of Nepal.
"I extend my deepest condolences to the people of Nepal who have lost loved ones and their livelihoods in the sudden floods," District Mayor Lee said. "I sincerely hope that the warm hearts of every Seongbuk-gu employee will offer some comfort to those affected, and that Nepal will overcome this disaster and restore peace to daily life as soon as possible."
