District mayor checks electrical and gas safety at traditional markets
Shares lunch with merchants' association, listens to concerns
Gangseo-gu District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon visited a traditional market Monday to inspect electrical and gas safety conditions and check on residents' livelihoods ahead of the chuseok holiday.
Jin toured Hwagok-dong's Nambu Golmok Market alongside about 30 officials from the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation's Seoul West branch and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation's Seoul South branch.
The inspection aimed to prevent safety accidents caused by equipment overloads and similar hazards, as market foot traffic and energy consumption tend to surge sharply during holiday periods.
The joint electrical and gas inspection covered power overloads and whether circuit breakers were functioning normally, replacement of aging electrical equipment, gas pipe leaks and whether shutoff systems were operating properly, and gas pipe capping measures.
After the inspection, Jin walked through the market's shops to greet merchants and residents ahead of the holiday.
He then moved to Hwagok Jungang Market to continue his on-site visit, joining members of the merchants' association for a lunch of "sundaeguk," a Korean pork blood soup, and listening to their concerns.
Jin plans to visit Hwagok Bon-dong Market and Kkachisan Market on Wednesday as well, continuing his outreach to residents during the chuseok holiday period.
"We will do our best to breathe new life into traditional markets that are struggling amid the economic slowdown," Jin said. "We will work to create traditional markets that residents visit more often and find more convenient to use."
