Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-kyun attended the opening ceremony of the inaugural Mapo District Mayor's Cup Pickleball Tournament at the Mapo Community Sports Center on Sunday afternoon, congratulating participants on the first-ever edition of the event and offering words of encouragement to competing players.
Co-hosted by Mapo-gu and the Mapo Sports Council and organized by the Mapo Pickleball Association, the tournament was the first district mayor's cup pickleball competition ever held in Mapo.
Pickleball has been drawing growing attention as a recreational sport, combining elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton into a game that is relatively easy to learn and accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.
At the event, Yoo presented commendations to two individuals recognized for their contributions to promoting pickleball and advancing recreational sports in the district, then met with players competing in the inaugural tournament to offer his support.
"As the first district mayor's cup pickleball tournament held in Mapo, I hope today marks a meaningful starting point for introducing pickleball to more residents and broadening the base of recreational sports," Yoo said. "We will listen closely to voices from the field and consistently support enthusiasts' activities so that a diverse range of recreational sports can bring more vitality to Mapo."
