15 families, 40 participants join songpyeon-making event at Gangnam Children's Hall to experience the meaning of Chuseok and traditional culture
Gangnam District Mayor Kim Hyun-gi joined children at Gangnam Children's Hall on Saturday to make songpyeon, the traditional rice cake, sharing the warmth of the Chuseok holiday ahead of the harvest festival.
The "Family Songpyeon-Making" event drew 15 pre-registered families — 40 participants in all — who made the rice cakes together, shared them and learned about the meaning of Chuseok and traditional Korean culture.
The event was held at 2:20 p.m. in the Danuri Hall on the sixth floor of Gangnam Children's Hall. It was designed to give families a chance to learn about the significance of the traditional holiday and create lasting memories together. Participating families explored the history of Chuseok and traditional culture before rolling and shaping songpyeon by hand, then tasting their creations and strengthening family bonds.
The district mayor joined the children in making songpyeon, chatting with families as they worked. He sampled the rice cakes they had made together, exchanged holiday greetings and reflected on the meaning of the approaching Chuseok.
"Sitting together as a family and sharing songpyeon we made with our own hands let us feel the joy of Chuseok a little early," Kim said. "I will continue to expand opportunities for families to laugh together and build memories, creating a Gangnam where children and families can be happy."
