Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun attended the opening ceremony of the 23rd Mapo Food Culture Festival on Thursday afternoon at the Yonggang Food Street area near 23 Tojeong-ro 31-gil, encouraging the merchants who have kept the street alive and marking the start of the event.

Organized by the Yonggang-dong Shopping District Merchants' Association, the festival was designed to showcase the diverse flavors of Yonggang Food Street — Mapo-gu's signature dining corridor — and to bring renewed energy to the local commercial district.

The venue featured a music lounge with busking performances, an art lounge where visitors could make calligraphy fans, and a play lounge offering board games such as Jenga and Korean chess.

Alongside this, an instant-lottery prize event added to the festive atmosphere, while a Yonggang Food Street market selling local specialty products offered visitors a wide range of food and entertainment options.

"The fact that this festival has continued for more than 20 years is thanks to the efforts of the merchants who have kept Yonggang Food Street going and to the many people who have never stopped visiting," Yoo said. "We will provide strong support so that Yonggang Food Street, as well as traditional markets and shopping districts across the area, can each preserve their own character and traditions while growing ever more vibrant."

The Mapo Food Culture Festival runs through Saturday.
