Gangneung City and the Gangneung District Office of Education said Friday they are pursuing the Gangneung Education Innovation Leading Region project, an initiative aimed at helping local schools tap into the region's educational resources and provide students with diverse, high-quality learning opportunities regardless of school size.

The project is designed to overcome educational limitations that schools have struggled to address on their own by connecting them with local resources, giving students in the Gangneung area broader opportunities for experience and learning within their own community.

On Friday, the two institutions signed an MOU with 13 local organizations — including the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education — at the situation room on the eighth floor of Gangneung City Hall to advance the initiative.

The agreement aims to build a cooperative framework for jointly pursuing the education innovation project that the Gangneung District Office of Education and Gangneung City planned together, and to strengthen the educational capacity of small schools by drawing on the region's diverse educational resources.

Thirteen institutions participated in the MOU, including Gangneung City, education agencies, universities, research institutions and anchor companies representing the local community.

The participating institutions agreed to link their human and material resources and expertise with schools, working together to drive innovation at small schools, address local education challenges and improve the learning environment for students.

The Gangneung District Office of Education said the MOU marks the start of a community-centered education cooperation framework in which not only the district office, schools and local government, but also universities, research institutions and businesses serve as partners in education.

The Gangneung District Office of Education and Gangneung City plan to build a sustainable education cooperation model by maintaining ongoing collaboration with institutions participating in the local council, connecting the region's human and material resources and expertise with school education, and raising the educational capacity of small schools.
