Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun joined a joint child traffic safety campaign Tuesday morning near school commute routes around Haneul Elementary School, working to create a safer walking environment for students heading to class.
The campaign was organized to mark the start of the new school term, with the goal of raising traffic safety awareness in school zones and improving commute routes for children. It marked the first collaborative project of the Mapo-gu Traffic Safety Working Council.
Participants included Mapo-gu officials, the Mapo Police Station, the Mapo-gu District Council and the Green Mothers' Association.
Yoo advised students to refrain from using smartphones while walking and to check for vehicles before crossing at crosswalks. He also urged drivers passing through school zones to slow down and observe traffic regulations, including prohibitions on illegal parking and stopping.
"The school commute routes that children travel every day must above all be safe," Yoo said. "We will work closely with relevant agencies to carefully inspect every stretch of those routes and build a Mapo where children can get to school safely."
