Daegu's special judicial police will conduct a targeted crackdown on illegal food distribution ahead of the chuseok holiday, inspecting hypermarkets and food manufacturing and processing facilities through Sept. 23, the city announced Monday.

The enforcement drive will focus on the display, storage or use of expired food products for sale, the unlicensed or unregistered manufacture and sale of food, false labeling of ingredients or other product information, and other violations of operator compliance requirements.

Inspectors will use on-site testing kits to immediately verify the origin of pork products at each location.

Beef samples will be sent to the Daegu Institute of Health and Environment for DNA testing to determine whether the meat is of domestic or foreign origin.

When violations are found, minor infractions will be corrected on the spot, while cases subject to administrative action will be referred to the relevant district or county office. Matters warranting criminal punishment will be investigated and forwarded to prosecutors.

"We will conduct an intensive preemptive crackdown on illegal distribution so that consumers can shop for chuseok foods with confidence," said Kwon Du-seong, head of Daegu's public welfare judicial police division.
