Program with PAIGH member states runs Tuesday through Friday
The National Geographic Information Institute under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will host the "5th Geographic Names and Spatial Information Capacity-Building Program" from Tuesday through Friday, welcoming member states of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH).
Officials from 16 PAIGH member states — including Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil — will take part in the program, which centers on expert lectures and field visits introducing South Korea's policies and latest technologies in geographic names and spatial information.
This year, the program will expand a dedicated "participant session" in which attending countries present and discuss their own geographic naming policies and practices, broadening the exchange of expertise and experience among member states.
A "World Maps and Geography Books Exhibition" jointly organized by the institute and participating countries will also be held during the event. On display will be each country's representative maps alongside South Korea's National Atlas, a 3D Braille globe, and other major Korean publications in the mapping and geography fields.
"This program is a platform for mutual exchange — sharing South Korea's experience and technology in geographic names and spatial information while also discussing the diverse practices of PAIGH member states," National Geographic Information Institute Director Kim Won-dae said. "We will continue to build lasting cooperative relationships with countries across the Americas."
South Korea joined PAIGH as a permanent observer state at the organization's 49th General Assembly in 2019, and the National Geographic Information Institute was designated as a capacity-building program provider in the fields of geographic names and spatial information.
