Daegu will open 834 public parking lots — totaling 44,888 spaces — free of charge during this year's Chuseok holiday, the city announced Monday.

Twenty-three public parking lots with 2,512 spaces near traditional markets will open one day earlier than last year, starting Sept. 22 — two days before the holiday begins — to make holiday shopping more convenient.

The city expects about 15,000 vehicles to benefit from free parking at those lots over the two-day period.

The remaining 77 city-operated public parking lots, 283 district-level public lots, and 451 parking facilities attached to education and public institutions will open free of charge starting Sept. 23.

Free parking periods may vary by location, and a full list of participating lots with their locations is available on the Daegu city government website's public notices section.

"I hope this expanded free parking will not only make pre-holiday shopping more convenient but also bring some much-needed vitality to local traditional markets struggling under high prices and an economic slowdown," Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho said.
