Nowon-gu District Mayor Seo Jun-o attended the "Joint Climate Action Resolution for Regional Transition" event Wednesday at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry's international conference hall.
Held under the motto "2030 Local Pledges, Into Action," the event was organized to set implementation targets for local governments working toward carbon neutrality by 2050 and to allow local government leaders to personally declare their commitment to climate action. The Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth, the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, and civic society activists also participated.
The event opened with remarks by Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun, chairman of the Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition Council, followed by a keynote address by Lee Chang-hoon, civilian co-chair of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth. Local government heads then jointly declared their commitment to implementation. After the local governments' resolutions were announced, Climate, Environment and Energy Minister Kim Sung-hwan responded by pledging central government support.
District Mayor Seo reaffirmed his commitment to policy implementation and solidarity among local governments at the event. He declared four priority tasks to be completed within his term: converting the district's official vehicle fleet to 100 percent electric vehicles, introducing a green building rating system, cutting energy consumption in public buildings by 10 percent, and establishing a community-based local upcycling center.
Nowon-gu has been designated the only carbon-neutrality pilot city in the greater Seoul area and is at the forefront of climate action, while also actively pursuing policy exchanges through international cooperative bodies including the RE100 City Network and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
"Local action, local solidarity and cooperation with the central government are all essential if we are to move beyond the climate crisis and usher in a new era of carbon neutrality," District Mayor Seo said, explaining the significance of the event. "We will fulfill our responsibilities as a carbon-neutrality pioneer city through forward-looking policy design and a strong will to act."
