'More ground to cover' on path to equality, president says

President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday he would work to build "a gender-equal South Korea," marking the start of Gender Equality Week.

Writing on his X account, Lee said Gender Equality Week runs from Tuesday through Monday and that South Korean society had "consistently walked the path toward gender equality, but there is still ground left to cover."

"True gender equality means a world where no one is discriminated against or excluded because of their sex," Lee said. "We must sweep away the prejudices that linger in everyday life, respect each other's differences, and build a society where everyone enjoys equal rights."

He said the government would "more carefully examine related systems and policies and remove, one by one, the unfavorable practices and barriers" so that people can experience gender equality "more broadly and deeply in their daily lives." And he went on to say he would "build a gender-equal South Korea where fair opportunities are guaranteed regardless of gender, where people can fully realize their efforts and abilities, and where they receive just treatment."

He also attached the hashtags "#GenderEqualityWeek" and "#GenderEqualityForAllBroaderAndDeeper" to the post.
