A commemorative ceremony honoring contributors to gender equality was held Tuesday, with forums, a film festival, exhibitions and lectures running across the district through Sunday.
Jungnang-gu held a commemorative event Tuesday in the below-ground auditorium of the district office to mark the 2026 Gender Equality Week.
Gender Equality Week is a legally designated observance established to promote harmonious development between men and women and advance substantive equality across politics, the economy, society and culture. The district organized the ceremony and a range of community programs to encourage residents to reflect on the meaning of gender equality and take part in related activities.
The event was divided into two parts: a formal ceremony and a special lecture. The first part included the presentation of commendations to individuals who contributed to spreading a culture of gender equality, along with a performance celebrating Jungnang-gu's designation as a women-friendly city. In the second part, attorney Lee In-cheol delivered a special lecture titled "Practical Life Law for Women's Rights and Happiness."
Alongside the ceremony, the district is running community-based neighborhood events across Jungnang-gu from Tuesday through Sunday in partnership with local institutions and organizations. Forums, a film festival, exhibitions and lectures will give residents opportunities to reflect on and discuss the value of gender equality. A highlight comes Saturday, when the district hosts "Walking Together in Jungnang," a community walk along the Bonghwasan trail for about 100 residents, featuring hands-on activities and programs along the route.
Newly designated a women-friendly city in 2026, Jungnang-gu is working to embed a gender-equality perspective into local policy and advance initiatives focused on women's empowerment, safety and care. The district is pursuing policies closely tied to residents' daily lives — including support for women's employment and entrepreneurship linked to the local fashion and garment industry, an integrated care project to address gaps in caregiving services, and efforts to improve safety in alleyways — as part of a broader push to build a gender-equal culture that all residents can feel.
"I hope this Gender Equality Week, held in Jungnang — a women-friendly city committed to supporting women's economic and social participation and ensuring safety and care — will give all residents a chance to reflect on the meaning of a society where we respect and stand by one another," District Mayor Ryu said. "We will continue to do our utmost to build a city where the values of gender equality take deep root across the community and every resident is respected and happy."
