Replacements named after Kim Seung-won, Lee So-young nominated as ministers
The Democratic Party of Korea on Tuesday designated Rep. Kim Eui-gyeom as the ruling party's whip on the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee and Rep. Choi Ki-sang as its whip on the Climate and Labor Committee.
Floor spokesperson Lee Ju-hee announced the appointments to reporters after a general assembly meeting, saying the party would "proceed with the necessary appointment and dismissal procedures."
The moves follow the nomination of Kim Seung-won, who had served as the Legislation and Judiciary Committee's ruling-party whip, as minister of justice, and Lee So-young, who had held the same role on the Climate and Labor Committee, as minister of climate and labor.
Kim Eui-gyeom, a two-term lawmaker who returned to the Assembly through the June 3 by-election, had been assigned to the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee. Choi Ki-sang is also a two-term lawmaker and has previously served as senior vice chairman of the Policy Committee and senior administrative vice secretary-general.
Lee added that next week is likely to become an intensive confirmation hearing period. "Once a confirmation hearing request reaches the National Assembly, it must be processed within 20 days, so hearings will likely be concentrated within that window," she said.
