Construction officially begins at the Gildong 368-5 site, raising expectations for the area's future value
Integrated children's support facility to strengthen childcare services and create a family-friendly environment
Gangdong-gu announced that the Gildong Station transit-oriented development project, centered on the Gildong 368-5 site in Seoul, has officially broken ground.
The site, which previously housed a gas station and multi-unit residential buildings, was designated for transit-oriented development in October 2022. Since then, the district has worked closely with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to ensure the smooth progress of administrative procedures, including planning and permitting. As a result, key milestones were cleared without delay — a district unit plan was officially designated in October 2024 and a building permit was issued in July 2025 — paving the way for full-scale construction to begin.
The project will produce a mixed-use building spanning six basement floors to 20 above-ground floors, with a total floor area of approximately 22,000 square meters. The building will include 189 residential units, neighborhood commercial facilities and an integrated children's support facility. The ground floor will feature restaurants, cafes and retail shops to activate the streetscape along Yangjae-daero and create a more vibrant commercial environment.
Through a public contribution arrangement, floors three and four will house the integrated children's support facility. The third floor will contain a branch of the children's community center and a Seoul-type kids cafe, while the fourth floor will accommodate a children's nutrition management support center and a Dream Start center.
Once open, children and families will be able to access a full range of services — play, care, counseling and education — all under one roof. The district plans to strengthen coordination among the individual facilities to improve convenience for users and respond more systematically to the growing demand for childcare support in the community, making Gangdong-gu a better place to raise children.
In addition, the district will operate a public contribution facility quality inspection team — comprising the district's public architects and relevant departments — to ensure the integrated children's support facility meets high standards of quality and completeness.
The team will use standardized and specialized architectural checklists developed by the district to conduct phased inspections covering construction, interior work and design from groundbreaking through completion. Lessons learned from inconveniences and missteps in the operation of existing public facilities will be actively incorporated, so that structural defects and potential usability issues after completion can be identified and addressed in advance, ensuring residents can use the facility with confidence and ease.
"We expect this groundbreaking to significantly improve the streetscape along Yangjae-daero and bring new vitality to the area," said Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee. "We will pay close attention to every aspect of the facility's development from the user's perspective, so that the integrated children's support facility can become a solid hub of support for children and families, and help make Gangdong-gu a city where it is great to raise children."
She added, "We will continue to pursue systematic development centered on transit-oriented areas, drive changes that residents can feel in their daily lives, and raise Gangdong's future value to realize our vision of a 'must-live Gangdong.'"
