Songpa 1-dong and Seoul Bonwon Hospital sign MOU to promote community health and medical welfare
Vulnerable residents to receive 15–20% discount on non-covered outpatient and inpatient costs, easing medical bill burden
Songpa-gu in Seoul has teamed up with a local medical institution to build a healthcare safety net for low-income residents.
The Songpa 1-dong Community Service Center signed a memorandum of understanding with Seoul Bonwon Hospital on Aug. 6 to promote the health and medical welfare of low-income residents in the area.
The agreement was driven by a joint public-private effort to assist medically vulnerable residents who have been unable to receive timely treatment — or have hesitated to seek it — due to financial hardship.
The community service center plans to actively identify vulnerable residents who fall through the cracks of the local welfare system and provide full administrative support to connect them with the hospital.
Under the agreement, the hospital will offer low-income residents referred by Songpa 1-dong a 15 to 20 percent discount on non-covered items incurred during outpatient and inpatient care. The arrangement is expected to ease the financial burden on eligible residents and give them access to quality specialist medical services.
The two organizations plan to use the MOU as a starting point for identifying and pursuing a range of tailored welfare projects for the community on an ongoing basis.
A Seoul Bonwon Hospital official said the hospital joined the agreement "to fulfill its social responsibility as a medical institution that grows together with the community," adding that it would "do its utmost to cooperate so that medically vulnerable residents can receive timely treatment and benefits."
Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Gang-seok said he hoped the agreement would "provide real help to residents who have been putting off or giving up on treatment because of financial difficulties," and pledged to "continue expanding tailored medical welfare services in cooperation with various private-sector resources in the district so that more residents can benefit."
