Daegu Health College's Handalbit Shared Collaboration Center ran its "DHC Visiting Senior Center Youth Guardian" program at 15 senior centers across five towns and townships in Gunwi-gun from Aug. 11 to Aug. 27.
The program was designed to support the health of elderly residents while sharing the college's healthcare expertise and academic capabilities with the local community.
Professors and students from nine departments affiliated with the college's DHC Supporters group took part, running 17 programs tailored to the needs of each senior center, with 253 elderly residents participating in total.
The program was held at senior centers in Gunwi-eup, Ubo-myeon, Uiheung-myeon, Sanseong-myeon and Samgungnyusa-myeon.
Drawing on their respective fields — physical therapy, dental technology, nursing, optometry and dental hygiene — participants offered blood pressure and blood sugar checks, vision tests, denture cleaning and care, oral health management, and joint disease prevention taping.
Activities aimed at emotional engagement were also offered, including memory care, dementia-prevention crafts and beauty programs.
Hwangbo Seo-hyeon, director of the Handalbit Shared Collaboration Center, said the program was meaningful because it allowed the college to share its expertise directly with elderly residents while giving students hands-on experience in their fields. "We will continue working with Gunwi-gun to develop major-linked programs that provide real, practical benefits to local residents," she said.
