Gyeongbuk Science University announced Sunday that Ku Jong-woo, head of its library team, received a commendation from the Minister of Education for his contributions to building the university library's foundation and improving education quality.

Ku joined the university when it opened in August 1993 and has worked in the library for more than 30 years.

In the early days of the institution, when staffing and budgets were extremely limited, he laid the groundwork for library operations — establishing systems for collecting and cataloging materials and building a reading room management system.

He also actively solicited donations from the university and related organizations, securing a collection of 30,000 volumes. By rapidly expanding the library's holdings, he helped reduce university expenditures and improve education-related performance indicators at the same time.

A university official said Ku also drove the modernization of library administration, leading the development of a mid-to-long-term library development plan and building a digital academic information service environment that includes an electronic library.
