Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, has been selected as South Korea's domestic nominee for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of gastronomy.

The UNESCO Korean National Commission announced the results of its review for the 2027 UNESCO Creative Cities Network on Friday, naming Pohang as the country's final domestic nominee in the gastronomy category.

Whether Pohang ultimately joins the network will be decided after an international review at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

Pohang has been pursuing membership in the Creative Cities Network to extend the value of its maritime food culture — rooted in the sea, fishing villages, ports and markets — into the areas of industry, tourism and urban development.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is an international platform designed to foster cooperation among cities based on their cultural assets and creativity.

UNESCO designates creative cities across eight fields, including crafts and folk art.

"Being selected as the domestic nominee marks a new beginning for Pohang's connection with the world," Pohang Mayor Park Yong-seon said. "We will share Pohang's unique gastronomic culture with the world and grow into a sustainable city of gastronomy — one that shapes the lives of its citizens and the future of the city through culture and creativity."
