A man in his 60s was arrested after pulling out a shotgun to threaten the occupants of an oncoming vehicle during an argument over right of way on a narrow farm road.

The Hwaseong Western Police Station said Sunday it plans to seek a detention warrant against the man, identified only as A, on charges of aggravated intimidation.

According to police, A is accused of brandishing a shotgun at three people, including driver B, after a dispute broke out over who should yield on a farm road in Hwaseong's Manse-gu at around 8 p.m. Saturday.

The road was too narrow for two vehicles to pass simultaneously, meaning one side had to reverse to let the other through. When A produced the shotgun during the altercation, B and the others overpowered him in a physical struggle and seized the weapon. Officers who responded to a report of the incident arrested A at the scene.

Police said their investigation found that A was a licensed hunter engaged in pest-bird control and that he had been carrying the shotgun under a legally obtained firearms permit.

"The suspect's shotgun contained about 20 live rounds, though we are still confirming whether it was loaded and ready to fire," a police official said. "A denies the charges, stating he had no intention of threatening the victims."
